Poker is a game of chance, but it is also a game of skill and strategy. The element of luck is what makes it possible for some people to make money and others to lose, but even a novice can learn a few things from this card game that will help them in life.

Poker is essentially a series of rounds of betting. When the cards are dealt, players can check (passing on betting) or they can raise (putting in more chips than the previous player). Players then have the opportunity to call, match a raise, or fold. A hand of poker consists of 5 cards. There are different hands, but the most common is a pair (two cards of the same rank) and a straight (cards that skip around in rank or sequence but are all from the same suit).

The reason this game is so fun and challenging is because you have to think critically and logically to count out your chances of winning. Poker also teaches you to decide under uncertainty, which is something that can be applied to many situations outside of the poker table.
